Richard studied at Newton Abbot School of Art after leaving School. He left college to pursue a career in music. This eventually led him to become an accomplished Jazz Guitarist. He currently leads his Latin/Jazz quartet, “Ragged Fish” which plays original material. All the compositions are written by Richard.
Music has always ‘accompanied’ Richard throughout his painting career which began professionally in the early 80’s.
In the early days of his career, The Torbay Art Society presented a painting to Princess Michael of Kent at a Devon County Show. After taking an interest in the work, the Society presented it to her as a gift.
Richard was invited to stage an exhibition of his paintings of Portugal in the Portuguese Embassy in London. One of the paintings was purchased by the Portuguese Ambassador.
Richard has since had many one-man shows and mixed exhibitions in the South of England. His work can be seen in numerous galleries from Cornwall to Kent.
Richard works essentially in watercolour and his unique use of colour and contrasting light and shade imbue his work with a power and dynamism rarely seen in watercolour. In the last 5 years Richard has incorporated other mediums to his paintings which has had the effect of expanding not only his textural width but also his subject matter. Working with acrylic, gouache and pastel has also broadened the artist’s appreciation of colour and dynamics.
Richard says “dazzling seascapes, playful beach scenes and rich landscapes make up the body of work in my portfolio. I am eternally inspired by nature and I constantly strive to capture its fleeting forms in all of my work. Nature can be seen as a form of poetry which contains subjective, yet universal meaning. It’s that meaning that I’m after in my work. If I have captured the “spirit” of a scene and conveyed it to you, then I have succeeded in my task as an Artist.”
Many of Richard’s paintings are now limited edition giclee prints.
